Transformer sourcing for renewables and storage
Solar, wind and battery storage projects connect to the grid through a project substation, and the main power transformer at that substation is usually the longest-lead item on the job. Interconnection dates and tax-credit milestones leave little room for delay.
The typical problem
A developer often learns the final transformer requirements only after the interconnection study sets the voltage and impedance. By then, the remaining time before the commercial operation date may be shorter than a new factory order. According to Wood Mackenzie's Q2 2025 survey, as reported by POWER Magazine, average lead times reached 144 weeks for GSUs. Wood Mackenzie also estimated in 2025 that GSU prices were up about 45% since 2019.
Projects in a portfolio often reach the same stage together, so a developer may need several units at once with slightly different requirements.
What we search for
- Main power transformers and GSU transformers through open and released factory slots.
- Units from cancelled and withdrawn projects. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Queued Up 2026 report found that more than 750 GW of projects withdrew from U.S. interconnection queues in 2025, and some of them had already ordered or received equipment.
- Never-energized units sitting at factories, ports or project sites.
- Substation switchgear and breakers to match.
Checking fit against your interconnection
A unit built for another project will rarely match yours exactly. The points that most often decide fit are impedance, high-voltage rating and BIL, vector group, tap range, and the MVA rating at each cooling stage. Some differences can be handled with a study update or a minor modification. Others cannot. We give you the details so your engineers and interconnection consultant can decide.
Storage and hybrid projects
Battery storage projects, and storage added to existing solar or wind sites, sometimes reuse an existing interconnection. That can change the transformer requirement, or make an upgrade of an existing unit an option. We look at the whole picture before recommending a purchase.
Domestic content and documentation
Where a project depends on domestic-content rules, the origin of the transformer and its components matters. We collect origin documentation for every option and flag where it is incomplete, so your tax and legal advisers can assess it.
Read how we run a search, or start one as soon as the interconnection study gives you a voltage and impedance.
FAQ
Common questions
Can you work to an interconnection or tax-credit deadline?
Yes. Tell us the date the equipment must be on site and we filter the search to options that can realistically meet it.
Do you check domestic-content and origin details?
We collect country-of-origin information for each option so your team and advisers can decide how it fits the incentives you are pursuing.
Can you find equipment from cancelled renewable projects?
That is one of the sources we contact. Developers with cancelled or delayed projects sometimes hold GSUs and substation transformers they no longer need.
