Transformer sourcing for government and defense buyers
Federal agencies, state and local governments, municipal utilities and defense installations face the same lead times as everyone else, with additional rules on how equipment is bought, where it comes from and how it is documented.
The typical problem
Public buyers often need equipment for resilience, restoration after storms or fires, base microgrids, or mission-critical facilities. Procurement rules, budget cycles and documentation requirements add steps that private buyers do not face. Meanwhile, according to Wood Mackenzie's Q2 2025 survey, as reported by POWER Magazine, average lead times reached 128 weeks for power transformers.
Supply is also largely international. Wood Mackenzie estimated in 2025 that about 80% of large power transformers used in the U.S. are imported, which makes country of origin a central question for buyers subject to domestic-content rules.
What we search for
- Power transformers and switchgear for installations, municipal utilities and public facilities.
- Mobile transformers and substations for emergency restoration.
- Domestic manufacturing options and open production slots where origin rules apply.
- Government and military surplus, as well as commercial surplus that meets the requirements.
Documentation
We collect a full document set for every option: ownership and chain of custody, manufacturer, country of origin of the unit and, where available, its major components, factory test reports, and condition history including DGA results for any unit that is not new. Where documents are missing, we say so before you rely on them.
Domestic-content and origin rules
Different programs apply different rules, and they can change. We do not give legal advice on which rules apply to your purchase. What we do is collect the origin information your contracting and legal teams need to make that call, and filter the search to options that are likely to qualify when you tell us which requirements apply.
All suppliers are screened for FEOC, sanctions and country-of-origin requirements as part of every search.
Procurement notes
We can provide market research on what equipment is available and where. If you would also like help writing a specification, tell us early: some procurement rules limit who can take part in a purchase after helping define its requirements, and we will work within those rules. How we engage depends on your procurement vehicle, and we will work within the process your contracting office uses.
