Transformer sourcing for data center developers

Large data center campuses increasingly take service at transmission voltage and build their own substations. That puts power transformers and high-voltage switchgear on the critical path, often with an energization date that was set long before the equipment was ordered.

The typical problem

A data center schedule is usually built around a date when power must be available. Construction, tenant commitments and financing depend on it. The equipment needed to deliver that power often has a longer lead time than the building itself.

According to Wood Mackenzie's Q2 2025 survey, as reported by POWER Magazine, average lead times reached 128 weeks for power transformers. Wood Mackenzie also estimated in 2025 that about 80% of large power transformers used in the U.S. are imported, so shipping, tariffs and country of origin are part of almost every decision.

Data center projects also tend to need several identical units, plus switchgear, at the same time. Finding one unit is hard. Finding a matched set is harder.

Matched sets and redundancy

Campus designs often use redundant transformers so one can carry load while another is out of service. Those units need compatible impedance and vector group to run in parallel. When we find a unit, we check it against the others in the design, not only against the spec sheet. If two available units come from different sources, we tell you whether they can operate together and what that would take.

Lining up the schedule

We compare options on delivery date as well as price. A unit that costs more but arrives a year earlier may be the better choice for a campus with tenants waiting. We also look at transport: the U.S. Department of Energy estimated in 2014 that transport and logistics account for roughly 3% to 20% of the total cost of a large power transformer, and heavy-haul routes can add time if they are not planned early.

FAQ

Common questions

Can you source both the substation transformer and the switchgear?

Yes. We can run both searches together so delivery dates for each piece of equipment line up with your energization date.

What do you need from a data center team to start?

The single-line diagram, the utility's interconnection requirements and the energization date you are working toward.

Do you work with the EPC or directly with the owner?

Either. We work with whoever is responsible for buying the equipment and share the report with the people you choose.
